Aquamanile under the form of a ram |
|
Origin: Beni Khalled (Cap Bon) Dating: Fatimid epoch, X – XI century. Materials: Cast bronze
|
An aquamanile under the form of a ram. The work lacks the front legs, the ears, and the horns. The animal is represented while standing with its long neck and a small head compared to the rest of the body. A crescent held up with a ribbon that is tied around the neck is pending over its chest.
The water that used to get into this aquamanile via a tube placed under its belly used to spring out from its slightly open mouth.
This specimen has to be considered in relation with a whole series of aquamaniles under animal forms discovered in different Muslim countries, namely in Egypt. |
